West Yorkshire 5 a Great Success

After a 5 year absence, the West Yorkshire 5 mile road race was brought back to life again and was heralded a great success. Promoted jointly by Bradford Airedale AC and West Yorkshire Fire Service, the event saw over 100 competitors tackle the undulating circular course which started and finished at Fire Service HQ, Birkenshaw. Race winner was Will Smith from Keighley & Craven AC in a solid time of 27mins 46secs followed in just 10secs behind by Bradford Airedale’s up and coming star Pete Hopson. The lead was hotly contested from the start and the first 4 finishers were home within just 30 secs. Athletes and their families were also treated to the superb facilities available at Fire Service HQ with modern changing and showering facilities available as well as a comfortable bar.

Activities for family members and supporters were also available with medals and certificates awarded to those participating in the ‘Family Distance Challenge’ as well as the chance to have a go at a selection of track & field events such as the shot putt, long jump and balancing test. High commendation goes to Ben Marchant from Saltaire Striders who kindly gave his time to run as a guide for blind competitor Louise Simpson from Southend AC. Louise had nothing but praise for Ben’s assistance which enable her to complete the course in 56mins 29secs almost 11mins in front of the final runner. Competitors were full of praise for the event and plans are already underway to ensure the event becomes an annual feature on every runners race calendar.
